HBOT Informed Consent
This page explains our hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) informed consent so you can read it before you schedule. A signed consent is completed with our team in your chart before your first session — this page is for your review.
What HBOT is
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into your blood plasma and reach body tissues. At Oubre Medical, sessions are performed in a 2.0 ATA chamber and last approximately 90 minutes, under the supervision of clinic staff.
Potential benefits
HBOT is FDA-approved for a specific list of medical conditions (for example, certain non-healing wounds). Its use for other purposes — including brain fog, mold-related symptoms, post-concussion recovery, athletic recovery, inflammation, and healthy-aging biology — is considered off-label and is supported by emerging but not conclusive research. I understand that:
- HBOT may support circulation, tissue oxygenation, inflammation balance, and cellular repair.
- Benefits are not guaranteed, individual responses vary, and best results generally require a series of sessions (commonly 10–20).
- HBOT is used as part of a broader plan, not as a standalone cure for any disease.
Risks and discomforts
- Ear or sinus barotrauma (pressure-related discomfort or injury) — the most common issue; managed by equalizing pressure (“Valsalva”). The main contraindication is being unable to clear the ears/sinuses.
- Temporary vision changes (usually mild and reversible) with repeated sessions.
- Sinus/ear pain, fatigue, or lightheadedness during or after a session.
- Claustrophobia or anxiety inside the chamber.
- Oxygen toxicity / seizure — rare, related to oxygen and pressure exposure.
- Rare, more serious events including middle-ear or lung injury (barotrauma).
Please tell us if any of these apply to you
Some conditions make HBOT unsafe or require clearance first. Let us know if you have or may have:
- Inability to clear/equalize your ears, current sinus/ear congestion, or a perforated eardrum
- Untreated collapsed lung (pneumothorax) or significant lung disease
- Recent ear, sinus, chest, or eye surgery
- Uncontrolled seizure disorder or a high fever
- Pregnancy
- Certain medications or implanted devices
- Claustrophobia
Alternatives, and your choice
Alternatives to HBOT include not receiving it and other supportive or medical treatments, which we're happy to discuss. Your participation is voluntary — you may ask questions at any time and may stop treatment or withdraw at any time.
